There are a few services in every country town in Australia that are essential to the happiness and well-being of its residents.
Chief among these are the post-office, the pub, and without a doubt the local bakery.
There are few better examples of a beloved bakery than 5 Loaves in Cummins. As they prepare to celebrate their 10th birthday, owner and staff are proud to loom back and see just how far they’ve come.
It was just over ten years ago that owners Michael and Katrina Agnew decided that a town with its own flour mill should have a bakery that makes use of local products.
So after a seven month full time training course at Regency TAFE, they chose a prime location on Bruce Terrace to build their dream.
Michael said that they had been happy there ever since.
“We are really proud to have been a part of the Cummins community for the past 10 years,” he said.
“Now we are just looking forward to many more years to come.”
Five Loaves Bakery are passionate about supporting their community, and pride themselves on using fresh, local produce wherever possible - something that can be appreciated with every bite.
To help celebrate with the community that has supported them so well through the years, 5 Loaves is running a number of competitions throughout July.
They’re also having some exciting specials and surprises during their birthday week, which will run from July 24 to July 28.
This means there has never been a better time than now to pop in and join the fun, and perhaps grab a delicious coffee or cake while you’re at it.
Michael and Katrina also wanted to take the opportunity to thank their staff for all of their support over the years.
“We owe much of our success to the friendly staff who work as a team to provide both excellent quality food and beverages in a relaxing atmosphere,” Michael said.
“It’s important for us that we provide employment for local people, and our staff cover a range of age groups and experience.
“This involves the senior staff who bring wisdom and a strong work ethic, to the juniors who are learning how to serve people, among other skills.
“We couldn’t do any of this without the, or without the wonderful customers we see every day.”
You can help 5 Loaves Bakery celebrate their big week by following them on Facebook, to make sure you stay up to date with all that’s going on next week. It’s also a great way to hear about the weekly specials.
SOURDOUGH IS THE SPECIALTY
While the classic meat pie is the heart and soul of any country bakery, the standout star of the 5 Loaves Bakery menu would have to be the sourdough bread.
With a huge range of pastries, coffees, cakes and breads available to please any palette, it is Michael and Katrina’s hand-crafted loaves that truly stand out.
“The dough is made from the same sourdough culture that Michael bought from San Francisco nine years ago,” owner Katrina Agnew explained.
“With breads that are handcrafted like that, well there aren’t a lot of people doing them.
“We’re very proud of the fact that we do all of our baking in-house, and that all of our products are made on-site.
“And we always try to use local products when we can.”
“Tegan has been making two cheesecakes each week, always in a different flavour, which have been very popular,”5 Loaves Bakery owner Katrina Agnew
With visitors from all over the globe enjoying their first class products and service, Five Loaves Bakery has an excellent reputation for providing quality baked goods and excellent coffee.
Another recent favourite has been the cheesecakes of the week, which Senior Apprentice Teagan Wallace has been creating.
“Teagan has been making two cheesecakes each week, always in a different flavour, which have been very popular,” Katrina explained.
“She’s also been very open to requests for new flavours, so if you’d like her to try something just come in and ask.”
