FOR the third year in a row Great Flinders retained the Phillis Shield over Port Lincoln in a close contest.
Port Lincoln. Jumped to an early lead, winning the first four matches of the night through Shane Stockham, Jason Regan, Darren Atkins and Kody Rosalia.
Great Flinders stopped the run with Vicki Mundy defeating Sally Kunze in four sets.
Port Lincoln surged further ahead with another five wins before Great Flinders worked themselves into the contest to trail by four after the first round of singles.
Great Flinders have a great history of being strong in doubles but Port Lincoln held firm to split the games and hold their lead of four at the halfway mark.
Great Flinders made their move in the second round of singles with impressive wins to Brian Turnball over Brenton Stagg, Ken Roediger over Fred Ettridge and Kym Wright over Lance Barnett.
Steve Fuss levelled the scores for Great Flinders at the end of the round with a straight sets win over Wayde Heidenreich to set up a nail biting finish.
Port Lincoln had some confidence after recording the first three doubles of the final round but Great Flinders’ doubles prowess came to the fore to win eight of the remaining nine matches.
