THE Coles Point staircase is among 22 projects that will share in more than $500,000 of recreational fishing grants.

The South Australian Recreational Fishing Grants Program provides community grants of up to $100,000 to support recreational fishing in South Australia.

The Lower Eyre Peninsula District Council has received in-principle support and will receive $49,686 – from the third and final round of the grant program – when the project has all necessary approvals.

Reinstating the staircase, which was damaged in last September’s storms, will once again provide safe beach access for beachgoers and fishers.

Environment Minister Ian Hunter said it was fantastic to see enthusiasm from fishing clubs, community groups and councils in applying for the grants.

He said it showed how important recreational fishing projects were, particularly in regional areas.
