Three Lower Eyre netballers have been selected to trial for South Australia’s under 17 team following their performance at the Mellor Olsson Academy Games earlier this month.
The games are held each year during the October school holidays at Priceline Stadium involving the eight regional and one metropolitan netball academies.
The Eyre Academy entered teams into divisions one and three with players from all Eyre Peninsula associations.
The first day was a tough one for Eyre division one, losing to Adelaide Metro 11-25 and South East 15-30 but did pick up a win against Southern 22-20. Division three fared better, losing first to Adelaide Metro 32-8 but defeated South East (37-11) and Southern (30-8).
Day two was an even one for division one, losing first to Central Ranges 20-24 but then drew Northern Regional 21-21 and defeated Spencer 27-14. Eyre division three again picked up two wins, defeating Central Ranges and Spencer but lost to Northern Metro by 12.
The third day saw division one defeat Murray 22-18 then lose to Northern Metro18-34, while division three lost its last two games to Murray (21-22) and Northern Metro B (20-28). Eyre division three qualified for the semi final but lost to Adelaide Metro 32-14. Eyre finished fifth in division one and fourth in division three.
For their efforts Port Lincoln’s Gretta Kennedy and Tumby Bay’s Desi Franks and India Copeland were selected to trial for the state team on October 28 and 29.
Coaches for the academy were Megan Lienert, Mandy Simes, Amy Allen (Eastern Eyre), Tara Welsh (Port Lincoln), Cassie Norton (Great Flinders) and program manager Megan Lienert (Eastern Eyre).
