The SA Ambulance Service is looking for more volunteers to join its teams in Coffin Bay, Tumby Bay, Port Neil and Cummins, but particularly in Elliston, and a new training course has made it simpler for new recruits to get started.

Regional team leader Chris Morgan said he was happy with how the new Ambulance Assist course had gone and encouraged anyone in the region who had thought about volunteering to take the step and give him a call.

“We always need good people who are willing to learn and give some of their time to the roster.

“It’s now easier than ever to get on the road as a volunteer.”

Eighteen-year-old aged care worker Lara Evans is Coffin Bay’s newest trainee ambulance volunteer.

Ms Evans started an Ambulance Assist course in February and was on the road and on call by June after going through the new graduated training pathway.

The new training scheme provides more flexible entry and training options so individuals can start supporting ambulance officers before progressing to provide patient care.

Ms Evans said she always went on shift with more experienced ambulance officers.

“It works really well as they push me to get in there and give it a go.

“It’s a welcome relief for them too when someone new joins the team. ”

Coffin Bay volunteer Ann Trewartha has recently achieved the milestone of 10 years as an ambulance officer with SAAS.

“I do this for myself as it keeps me physically and mentally active because I’m always learning.

“I also love to help the community.

She said the Ambulance Assist program had given new people great confidence in themselves.

“I would encourage anybody to just do it if it’s something they think they would like to try.”
