Port Lincoln youth join Australian Catholic Youth Festival pilgrimage

Young people from Port Lincoln were among 31 people from across the Diocese of Port Pirie who went on a pilgrimage to Sydney last month to participate in the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.

They joined 20,000 young people from across the nation at the largest gathering of Catholic people since World Youth Day in 2008.

The theme of the festival was ‘Opening New Horizons for Spreading Joy’.

Through an array of plenary sessions, workshops, interactive games, justice experiences, Bishops’ exchanges, music and prayer experiences participants were led to understand how they could be signs of joy and hope in the world.

On Saturday, December 9 the pilgrims set off on one of three Pilgrimage Walks, starting on the northern side of the Harbour bridge, the Shrine of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop or St Mary’s Cathedral.

Prayers were prayed and songs sung as the pilgrims made their way to the Domain in the Royal Botanical Gardens where the final Mass was celebrated.

The festival heralded the beginning of a Year of Youth in the Australian Church, which will last until the beginning of Advent 2018.
