It was the year Australians voted for ‘Advance Australia Fair’ to be our national anthem, political party the Australian Democrats was formed and South Australian premier Don Dunstan and Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser were re-elected to their respective offices.

The top song was Don’t Cry for Me Argentina by Julie Covington and big movies included Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saturday Night Fever.

In sport the VFL grand final between North Melbourne and Collingwood ended in a draw, North Melbourne won the replay by 27 points, Port Adelaide won the SANFL grand final against Glenelg by 8 points and Australia defeated England by 45 runs in the centenary test.
