A WHALE and its white calf sighted at Proper Bay, Rotten Bay and Tulka this week are the first whale sighting reported to the Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre so far this season.

The southern right whale and calf were first spotted on Monday.

Centre co-partner Di Dennis said the whales were seen at Proper Bay and Rotten Bay as well as Tulka.

"It's the first we've heard of so far," Mrs Dennis said.

The whales pass through local waters during breeding season on their way to Head of Bight.

She said the weather had been rough so while there may have been more whales passing through local waters, they might not have been spotted.

However whale numbers followed a pattern of increasing every second year and last year was a quiet year, so we could be in for more sightings.

Mrs Dennis said about 40 whales had been seen at Head of Bight to date.
