At just 21 years of age and in his first year with Ports and also as a player in the Eastern Eyre football league, Cunningham has taken out the coveted award with 23 umpire votes.
Joel Fitzgerald from Kimba Districts was the league A grade leading goal kicker with 79 goals, Jack Kenny of Eastern Ranges Football Club won the Jenner family Medal for best player at the Mortlock Carnival and Tom Gray also from Ranges won the Ramsey Bros Medal for Most Mail Medal votes to a player under 21.
The Eastern Eyre football league put on the Mail Medal count at the end of each season and this year was hosted by the Kimba Districts Football Club. Bus loads of players and supporters travelled from each club district, with 105 seated to enjoy a two course meal and view the medal count.
League President and MC of the days’ proceedings, Graham ‘Bert’ Woolford said the day is well supported each year.
“The players really enjoy the opportunity to get together and have a day out,” he said.
“They enjoy the format of the count, with a power point presentation of votes and photos,” he added.
“Today was another success, it was a tight and close finish to the count and Nick Cunningham is a deserved winner,” he said.
The Junior and Senior Colts medal count will be held following the Preliminary finals at Cowell next Saturday night.
