What is e-waste recycling?

E-WASTE: What is it and how do you do you recycle it?
E-WASTE: What is it and how do you do you recycle it?

Do you have an old television lying around, or old phones, computers and laptops?

If you are not sure what to do with them – there is good news – they can all be recycled at multiple places across Port Lincoln.

The Port Lincoln Resource Recovery Centre has an effective e-waste (electronic waste) program where unused and unwanted electronic items can be delivered at no cost.

“An e-waste drop off service is available, free of charge, for items such as TVs, computer equipment, refrigerators, photocopy machines,” Port Lincoln City Council operations manager Craig Matena said.

Batteries contain a high proportion of valuable materials which can be recovered and reused so the Port Lincoln council took on a three-month trial earlier this year for people to recycle batteries where RecyclePak battery recycling buckets were provided at both the Port Lincoln Library and the council office.

“The trial was a success and council will continue and replace the buckets as required,” Mr Matena said.

People can drop off any computers, laptops and televisions to Radio Rentals or Harvey Norman for recycling.

Port Lincoln Radio Rentals store manager Jareth Stocker said it was a government computer and television recycling scheme for e-waste where the store took people’s old electronics.

“We had an old lady came in yesterday to drop off a laptop and last week we had a couple of phones and laptops brought in, so in a month we get about 15 items,” Mr Stocker said.

MobileMuster began in 1998 and is still available today to recycle those old mobiles sitting at the bottom of a drawer.

More than 90 per cent of materials in mobile phones are recyclable and in Port Lincoln, MobileMuster boxes are located at both the Telstra and Optus stores.

Before recycling any old phones, laptops or computers people are advised to make sure they have wiped any data and memory from the device.
