Up against his doubles partner Scott Puodziunas, the number two seed who had just returned from a tour of Europe, it was always going to be an entertaining final.
Polkinghorne won the first set in convincing style 6-1 but was put to the test in the second set going down in the tiebreak 7-5.
With an early break against Polkinghorne in the third he had to dig deep breaking back to level the scores at two all.
After getting another break and winning his serves Polkinghorne was serving for the match at five games to three.
