The memorial Mallee Park Ravens team paid tribute to the netballers of the past by winning the A grade at the South Australian Aboriginal Football and Netball State Carnival.
The team donned the orange colours worn by the original Ravens who played in the Port Lincoln Netball Association in the 1970s.
The team played against other indigenous teams in the carnival held at Kilburn Football Club on September 30 and October 1.
Ravens started Pool B with Adelaide Panthers and despite playing hard went down by four goals.
From that loss they gelled as a team and did not lose another game, their biggest win coming against Far North Flinders 23 to 4.
Ravens made it to the semi final, defeating Narungga by 13 goals before facing top side Kaurna in the final, playing four solid quarters to win by 4 goals and become 2017 netball champions.
Playing coach Debra Flavel said it felt special to be able to share the win with family.
“It was also very special for me as a mother, aunty, nanna, coach and player to play with my family especially my two daughters Ruby and Tarlina Flavel,” she said.
“All players were representing the past players of Ravens Netball Club straight from the goodidoo (heart) and in memory of my mother Raelene Walker.”
Shayla Miller-Pickett won the Ravens Player of the Carnival medal, named after a well loved lady, Avril ‘Jerry’ Miller.
Miller-Pickett shined in goal attack with strong hands and good shooting for goal.
All other players also showed great skills in their positions.
Mrs Flavel said she had spoken to Ron Goodwin, who coached Ravens for four years in the 1970s and is now retired in Bundaberg.
Mr Goodwin, 83, said all Ravens players were good netballers who showed natural ability and were encouraged to show good sportsmanship.
Mrs Flavel said many people deserved thanks, including sponsors Eyre United Football and Netball Club, Yanta Poll Merinos and White Suffolks, Nantoura Poll Merinos and Mallee Park Football Club.
Thanks also went to Kelly Carbine and Robert Varcoe for their hard work and dedication, Tarlina Flavel for designing the uniforms and t-shirts, team manager Nicole Mastrosavas, officials Melanie Pickett, Twania Flavel and Lisa Miller, all Ravens players and husband Robert and family for their love and support.
