Preparations are underway for the 50-year celebration of the Elliston football and netball clubs next month.

The committee has been working hard over the past six months to get ready for the celebratory weekend of April 14 and 15.

Netball club secretary Monica Thompson said the weekend was a chance to celebrate the memories of the past half-century.

“It is a weekend in recognition of 50 years of people before us who have contributed to the club,” Ms Thompson said.

“This is important for us because we are a small club and so we want to remember the good times over the past 50 years.”

The history of the Elliston clubs started in 1967 when Elders representative Dean Matthews, along with well-known local sportsman Peter Penna and local publican Bruce Rumbelow, had a lengthy conversation in the Elliston Hotel front bar, where they decided to go ahead with forming a club.

From this discussion a foundation of membership for the football club was started, with many non-playing people having the foresight to form a club.

“The rest, as they say, is history from that point,” Ms Thompson said.

A year later the Elliston football and netball teams competed in their first games as a club, joining the Le Hunte Association.

The B grade netball team took out the premiership in that debut campaign.

Many of the older Eyre Peninsula residents would remember the annual Red and White Cabaret which was held in the local hall, which was a major fundraiser for the football club and was well attended by the wider region.

A number of past players and supporters have shown great interest in the celebration weekend by submitting a number of photos online, which has generated plenty of interest and memories ahead of the weekend.

On Saturday, April 14, Elliston will host Western Districts for the first match of the 2018 football and netball season.

Following that, a formal cocktail dinner will start at 6pm at the Elliston Hall.

Tickets can be purchased for $30 from the Elliston Hotel, Elliston Post Office, by phoning Monica Thompson on 0428 446 157, or at the door on the night.

The night will include speeches, an open mic and an auction of the heritage guernseys the A grade team will play in to commemorate the occasion.

The shirts to be auctioned will bear the names of all the players from the three A grade premiership teams, which organisers hope will generate plenty of interest.

There will be memorabilia and photos on display for everybody to view during the evening.

The following day there will be a trip down memory lane with the clubs hosting a wind-up barbecue lunch at Sailors Gully for everybody to enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere. Take your own chairs and drinks.

Ms Thompson said the committee was hoping to see the community come along to enjoy the weekend and make it a celebration to remember.
