In Australia 1987 saw Bob Hawke retain his role as Australian Prime Minister by defeating John Howard in the federal election.

In entertainment it was the year Matt Groening first debuted The Simpsons, and in sport 1987 also saw the VFL/AFL debuts of the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears (who merged with Fitzroy in 1996 to become the Brisbane Lions).

Popular movies in 1987 included Lethal Weapon, Dirty Dancing and Robocop while popular songs included ‘The Locomotion’ by Kylie Minogue, ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ by Bangles and ‘The Final Countdown’ by Europe.
