Port Lincoln is set to host its first ever night of sanctioned amateur boxing bouts.
Williams Boxing Gym has organised the boxing event that will take place at the YMCA Leisure Centre on July 14.
The fight night will be included in the Boxing South Australia/Boxing Australia event calendar for 2018.
Amateur boxers from across the state would travel to Port Lincoln to compete for either a belt, sponsored by a local business, or prize money for open class boxers.
Williams Boxing Gym club manager and head coach Scottie Williams said this was a big event for Port Lincoln and had been in the making for eight years.
He said it would be a great showcase for Port Lincoln’s boxing talent
“It gives our local guys an opportunity to perform on a stage on their home soil, but also add to the profile of boxing in Port Lincoln,” he said.
Mr Williams is organising the event alongside Peter Williams, Renae Williams, Adrian Kraft and Louie Famiglietti.
The gym has had success with its exhibition events outside the Grand Tasman Hotel in 2014 and at the leisure centre in 2016, which raised money for men’s health.
Proceeds from the upcoming event will go to the gym, which is a not-for-profit organisation, to go towards its causes.
Peter Williams said it would be a great night for those who love the sport of boxing and want to support local causes.
“I you want to see South Australia on display in boxing, Port Lincoln will be the place in July,” he said.
Tickets for the event will be on sale soon with ringside VIP tables of 10 for sale.
Local businesses will also have the opportunity to sponsor one of ten belts up for grabs for winners.
