Koonibba put a slow start to the A grade Far West football season behind them with a much-needed 14-point home win over Western United on Saturday.

The Roosters led throughout the contest but had to fend off the fast-finishing Tigers as it ended 10-14 (74) to 8-14 (62).

They took the initiative in the opening quarter yet with 11 scoring shot to Western United’s three only led by 18 points at the first break, thanks to eight behinds.

That changed in the second term as Koonibba kicked five straight to the Tigers’ two goals and six behinds to see the lead extend to 30 points at half-time.

It was a tight third quarter with only three goals kicked between them which saw the lead reduced by five points.

Western United dominated the final quarter as they eyed a comeback to maintain their perfect start to the season, but it was not enough to claw back the deficit.

Swayne Day kicked five goals for Koonibba, while Royden Miller added two.

Rohan Scott and Dale Shipard kicked two apiece for the Tigers.

The Blues were dominant in defeating Thevenard by 96 points.

The Magpies were kept scoreless in the first and third quarters as the match ended 20-13 (133) to 6-1 (37).

The Blues kicked the only four goals of the first term to lead by 27 points at the break, although Thevenard showed fight to hit back with four goals to three in the second quarter.

Yet the Blues surged clear after half-time thanks to a commanding third term which saw them add six goals to take the lead out to 66 points.

Seven goals in the fourth term ended the match on a joyous note for the visitors.

Thomas Clayton was the chief destroyer with seven goals, while Brendan Kloeden chipped in with four more for the Blues.

Jarrad Trowbridge responded with three goals for Thevenard.

Koonibba pushed clear in the second quarter to win their B grade match against Western United by 58 points.

The Roosters led by only eight points after a tight first quarter, then added four goals to no score in the second term.

The Tigers could only manage one goal in each of the final two quarters as Koonibba cruised to a 12-12 (84) to 3-8 (26) result.

Ernest Ware and Derek Gray kicked three goals each for the Roosters.

The Blues were too good for Thevenard, winning 14-12 (96) to 5-0 (30).

Shannon Blackham’s three goals helped them to the 66-point victory.

The Blues led by 15 points at quarter-time and continued to extend the margin in the following two quarters.

They added five goals to one in the final term to secure a comfortable triumph.

Meanwhile, former Far West players Kade Chandler and Jacob Collins, now with Norwood, have been selected for the South Australian under 18 training squad.
