Five young Eyre Peninsula footballers will have the chance this month to try out for South Australia’s under 18 team.
About 50 SANFL players where shortlisted in early May and will take part in an internal trial match at Thebarton Oval on May 13.
The list includes 11 from Norwood, including Eyre Peninsula players Ben Jarvis (Port Lincoln), Jacob Kennerley (Cummins), Cameron Taheny (Cleve), Jacob Collins (Ceduna) and Kade Chandler (Ceduna).
Following the trial match the list will be reduced to between 30 and 35 who will form the basis of the team that will play in the National Australia Bank AFL Under 18 Championships beginning in June.
Jarvis, Taheny and Kennerley are boarding at Rostrevor College in Adelaide and also play football for the school.
Fellow Rostrevor student and Norwood player Luke Valente from Adelaide was also selected for the squad.
They could follow the footsteps of another Rostrevor boarder from Eyre Peninsula, Wudinna’s Harrison Petty who was drafted to Melbourne in the 2017 AFL Draft.
Rostrevor First XVIII team manager Shannon Simpson said to have four players in the state squad was a credit to the players and to the coaching and development team at the college.
South Australia will play its first championships match against Western Australia at Alberton Oval on June 3.
