West Coast Hawks defeat Elliston by one point

Mid West football

WEST Coast Hawks have held on to their undefeated status despite a strong challenge from Elliston, winning by one point on Saturday.

The Hawks have won all six of their matches in the lead up to the match against the Roosters, while Elliston had won three.

Elliston made more from their scoring opportunities in the first half despite the Hawks also setting up opportunities but not quite being as accurate as the Roosters.

The Roosters held a slight four point lead at half time, but the Hawks started to take control which led to more shots on goal.

However inaccuracy kept the Hawks from setting up a dominant lead, kicking four goals from 10 scoring shots while Elliston kicked four straight to trail by two points at the final break.

The Hawks again had the majority of scoring shots in the final quarter but they only managed two goals from seven scoring opportunities while Elliston kicked three straight.

It proved to be enough as the Hawks held on to win 10.17 (77) to Elliston 12.4 (76). Hawks’ Aiden Whitford top scored with three goals while Elliston’s Glen Tonkin and Adam Hurrell also scored three.

It was also a close match at Kyancutta as Central Eyre came from behind to defeat Western Districts by eight points.

After a six goal first quarter the Bulldogs only kicked one in the second while Districts scored six majors to lead by 12 points at half time.

A close third quarter set up an exciting final quarter as Central Eyre turned a five point deficit into an eight point win as the Bulldogs put through four goals while the Tigers were kept to five behinds.

Bulldogs’ Tasman Fitzgerald top scored with five goals while Damon King-O‘Loughlin also impressed with four of his own.

Wirrulla had a more dominant win despite the best efforts of the home side Wudinna United, winning by 139 points.

The Bombers kicked five goals in each of the first three quarters while their defensive pressure kept the Magpies’ opportunities limited.

The home side only scored two goals for the game, one in the second quarter and one in the third.

Wirrulla finished strongly in the final quarter with 15 scoring opportunities, leading to seven goals while Wudinna United were kept scoreless, to give the Bombers the win 22.23 (155) to 2.4 (16).

Wirrulla’s Simon Webb kicked five goals with his teammate Robert Marshall also impressing with four majors, while Jeffrey Hutt and Lachlan Kerr kicked Wudinna United’s only goals for the day.

This weekend will see Mid West players head to Port Lincoln for the Mortlock Shield.
