Cummins’ Railway Triangle toilet block is one of six international award winners in the 2018 International Toilet Tourism Awards.

Entries from across North America, Asia, Europe and Australia were entered into the awards, with winners announced in six categories.

The Cummins Mosaic Loo won for Best Economic Contributor and was recognised for the work done by the community to turn a simple red brick toilet block into a “public loo with personality”.

The judge’s comments noted how the Cummins community reinvented an old facility and brought it back to life in a new and quirky way.

“The public toilets in the town have become a tourist attraction in their own right, which shows smart thinking by the local community.”

“Unlike some entries in the awards, Cummins has few visitors.

“They have therefore done a great job creating a ‘must-see’ attraction that generates income for local businesses.”

Mosaic group member and Lower Eyre Peninsula District Council councillor Wendy Holman said she was “blown away” to learn the toilet block was successful.

“Our group is delighted to have this recognition, especially as it is an international competition,” she said.

“Winning the ‘Economic Contributor’ award demonstrates how important public toilets are in attracting positive visitation experience and then people are ‘staying to spend more than a penny’ in our town.”

Mrs Holman thanked the Port Lincoln Times for forwarding details about the awards to the group.

The awards, now in their second year, was created by MyTravelResearch.com to show the link between innovative, clean toilets with great design and a successful tourism economy.

Toilets at the Brisbane Airport were another winner, picking up Best Accessible Toilet for its facilities, which includes facilities for people with disabilities and an indoor loo for guide dogs.
