Coffin Bay will host its own racing event with a billy cart race this Father’s Day, with the Port Lincoln Men’s Shed and a local hardware store lending a hand.
The Billy Cart Derby will take place on Morgan Road in Coffin Bay on September 2 with entries open in seven categories from under 7s to 13 to 15-year-olds, as well as for traditional, ladies and seniors.
Coffin Bay Progress Association has planned the event as a way of attracting people of all ages to the town.
Lower Eyre Peninsula councillor and Coffin Bay resident Peter Mitchell said the council would close the road for the event and would also open up its transfer station at Coffin Bay for people to obtain cart materials.
Port Lincoln transfer station operators Veolia will also provide items this Sunday.
Mr Mitchell said this was an opportunity for children and teenagers to get outside, away from their screens and have some hands-on fun.
“Before TV, video games and the like kids had to make up their own fun, billy carts were a part of that,” he said.
“I remember working on carts with my dad, we used what materials we had and picked up materials from the dump or wherever we could.”
Mr Mitchell said Bunnings Warehouse Port Lincoln had made a contribution by providing six carts that would be assembled by the Port Lincoln Men’s Shed.
Bunnings Warehouse Port Lincoln complex manager Nathan Spinks said the store was happy to ensure as many entrants as possible were able to take part.
“The Bunnings Port Lincoln team are always happy to help with activities that benefit the local community,” he said.
“We hope the billy cart race event is a great success.”
Port Lincoln Men’s Shed team leader Bill Broughton said work had already started on putting together the billy carts.
“We’re really proud to be involved in this,” he said.
“It’s been well received, we discussed it with the members and all members are enthusiastic.”
A barbecue will also be available on the day
