Here is the Port Lincoln Times’ weekly Flashback Friday feature, so why not start off your weekend with a time warp to the past?
This week we go back 37 years to see who made the news in the pages of the Port Lincoln Times between July and September of 1981.
For movie buffs it was the year everyone’s favourite archaeologist, Indiana Jones, was first seen on the big screen in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the biggest box office movie of the year.
It was also the year one of Australia’s most well known war movies, Gallipoli, was released, starring Mel Gibson and featuring scenes shot near Port Lincoln.
In sport Carlton won the VFL premiership against Collingwood, Port Adelaide defeated Glenelg to win their 27th SANFL premiership and Just a Dash won the Melbourne Cup.
However the year also saw one of Australia’s more embarrassing sporting moments as Trevor Chappell bowled underarm in the final delivery in a match against New Zealand, under instruction from captain and older brother Greg Chappell.
