PORT LINCOLN teenager Nathaniel Emming has uncovered a passion for sailing and has achieved some impressive feats since trying out the sport.

Nathaniel moved from Murray Bridge to Port Lincoln about five years ago with his family, his mother Kylie, father Matt and sister Ashlyn.

He said a ‘come and try’ pamphlet caught his eye at school and he found himself attending the Port Lincoln Yacht Club soon after.

“It’s been brilliant” Nathaniel said.

He soon joined the yacht club’s Learn to Sail program and was mentored by Andy Dyer in an optimist class single hander.

Next came the cadet class and last season Nathaniel sailed the Laser sailboat, generously gifted by club sponsor McDonald’s Port Lincoln.

Nathaniel was awarded the Darc Harvey trophy for being a very positive role model for youth sailing in the 2017-2018 season.

“I love it, it’s heaps of fun,” he said.

Nathaniel said he was enjoying the competitive sportsmanship of sailing.

Since taking up the sport he has sailed in local and state regattas and even took out a first place in the Queen of the Gulf regatta, sailing in the heron class with a friend of his father’s.

Nathaniel said sailing had introduced him to other young people both local and interstate and that he had “made some good mates”.

He has sailed in several regattas and is joining the Learn to Sail program this year as a young mentor.

Yacht club member Andrew Cornell-Trapp said it was great to see young people like Nathaniel get the opportunity to develop personal skills and confidence on the water.

Cornell-Trapp said the Port Lincoln Yacht Club was grateful for sponsors like McDonald’s for making opportunities, like the one afforded to Nathaniel, available to the community’s youth through the yacht club’s various sailing programs.

The 2018/19 sailing season is about to begin with the first day of racing this weekend on October 13.

The official opening day will be on October 20 with the Sailpast commencing at 2pm and Commodore's Cup at 2.30pm.
