Byass books spot in state country team

Port Lincoln Tennis Association was represented in the Eyre Peninsula Foundation Cup team that competed in Berri last week.

Players from all over the Eyre Peninsula played in the teams and individual events against the best players from across regional South Australia, vying for State Country spots.

Eva Schmucker (Cowell) was part of the winning Super 10s team and had great wins over the week.

Holly Bates and Brodie Cash won the Hewitt award for tactical understanding, decision making and movement around the court.

Playing on grass the teams struggled to adapt to the slower court surface but gave their all and should be congratulated for their performance on and off the court.

Port Lincoln’s Arley Byass took out the Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row for his age group showing his character on and off the court.

Byass was the standout performer in the individual tournaments winning the 15-year-old boys singles championship for the second year in a row.

Considering the quality players involved this was a reward for the hours of training he put in over the winter. He booked a spot in the SA State country team who will compete in January against teams from other states.

Other outstanding efforts were from Seb Henderson and Sally Cabot who won through to the semifinals in their individual events; Cabot losing to the number one seed Anna Stewart who won the event and Henderson losing in a super tiebreak 10 points to 8.

Special mention to coaches and team managers who spent the week encouraging and looking after our players and our sponsors.

The community is invited to the association’s open and registration day on October 13 at 9am.

Returning players are encouraged to register at 10am. We will have the barbecue fired up, free raffle and the opportunity to have a free hit. This is for juniors and seniors.
