Eating lunch takes a necessary plan

When Piper started prep last year, there were no problems settling into school and she quite enjoyed going.

However, when it came to eating her lunch there were constant problems.

She wouldn’t eat any of it. 

A typical lunch consisted of a sandwich, a yoghurt, at least one serve of fresh fruit and normally a ‘treat’, either a cheese stick, crackers or homemade muesli bar slice.

Nothing in the lunch box would be unusual to what Piper usually ate at home.

Many days she came home having only eaten either a yoghurt, or a single serve of fruit or her treat snack, and she was usually very tired, and pretty grumpy.

Sometimes when asked, she said she couldn’t eat her lunch because she ran out of time, but for her to eat virtually none of her lunch was really worrying.

After talking to her teacher it was slow progress getting Piper to eat her lunch, but over the year it improved until the lunchbox came home empty.

There were limited times for children to eat during the day, especially at school, and Piper preferred to play with friends instead of eating.

If you have a fussy eater like Piper, encourage your child to sit and eat before heading out to play, or talk to the school teacher about making sure all children get a chance to eat enough before play starts.

With the help of her prep teacher, Piper started eating her lunch with her group of friends in class.

Then she was calm enough to see that all her friends were doing the same thing, eating before going out to play.
