Miss Dempsey’s Saddlery and Feed Supplies Sara Bennett is just 18 years of age but has already found her passion in life.
She is one of the Tunarama’s 2019 Ambassador Quest entrants and is raising funds for the RSPCA due to her love of animals.
“I’ve always loved my animals, and I’m especially fond of birds and dogs,” she said.
After moving from Kalgoorlie just before Tunarama in 2017, Miss Bennett said she immediately scouted out places as soon as she arrived in Port Lincoln.
“I inquired about becoming a volunteer there (RSPCA) every couple of days, and grew to love cats too,” she said.
Miss Bennett said she joined the quest to help raise funds for the installment of dog kennels at the care centre, but on the whole it was for the betterment of the animals.
“It wasn’t even a second thought, I joined because of them….and I get to be sponsored by an animal organisation for an animal organisation, so its a win-win really,” she said.
Miss Bennett said she found the interaction with the people of Port Lincoln had been one of the most rewarding things about the quest.
“The most amazing thing was at the Christmas carols where all the entrants had to stand up on the stage, and people seemed so interested in us, and saw us as a positive influence on the town,” she said.
“For someone like me, a nobody from another town, it was so rewarding to see how differently people look at you.
“If people see me down the street and know me as an advocate for animal rights, then my job is done,” she said.
She also said her background in dance had helped with public speaking and other events.
“I’ve never been one to back away from big groups, I can get up in front of people I don’t know and say what it is I want to do,” she said.
She said this year’s Tunarama will be the third she’s attended.
“I love seeing all the local stalls and how creative people are,” she said.
“I can’t do any of that so its amazing to see, but I also love the rides,” she said.
Miss Bennett said she wouldn’t have entered unless she had the sponsorship of Dempsey’s this year.
“I’d like to thank them for their massive amount of support...they’ve made the quest truly something to remember.”
