Port Lincoln 8 Ball Association is celebrating 50 years and has a number of events on its agenda to celebrate the milestone.
This year will be a big one for the association as it hosts the Eyre Peninsula Championship during the March long weekend and plans a 50th year dinner for later in the year.
Association president Ben Adams said the association was excited for the year ahead and to host the championship as it would host players from across the state and even Alice Springs.
“We won (the EP Championship) last time we hosted it and we’re reasonably confident we can do it again,” he said.
Mr Adams said the association had a subcommittee set up to organise a dinner event and to put together a singles championship later in the year.
The association aims to have at least 80 players for the championship and attract players from areas including Port Augusta, Whyalla and Adelaide.
“We’re looking at the 95 to 120 (player) range but need at least 80 to make it viable,” he said.
On top of this the association is inviting players to sign up for the new season, which begins on February 5.
Applications are open for individuals and teams with a minimum of five players needed to fill out a team.
The association can assist anyone interested in playing but are unable to fill a team.
Mr Adams said there were already good numbers for the season but more players were always welcome.
“We’d love to see more teams and can always cater for more teams and more players,” he said.
Mr Adams, who has been playing 8 ball for 25 years, said the sport had continued to go strong for so many years because it was a sociable sport and was accessble to people of all ages.
“The biggest thing is it’s a sport you’re never too old for,” he said.
There are players of different experience levels with Les Kalms having played for all 50 years of the association.
Nominations for players and teams close on January 21.
