Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey has called on sporting clubs and groups to apply for funding from a $28.9 million national sport participation program.

Part one of the Federal Government Sport Participation Grants targets local not-for-profit groups and sport clubs who run a program to get inactive people moving.

Mr Ramsey said the grants were for new programs and aimed to fund operational costs.

He said sporting groups and other organisations were urged to create programs that would help attract  a wide range of people to participate in physical activity.

“We know just how important sport and physical activity is to helping both children and adults lead a happy, healthy life,” he said.

The second round of the program will target national organisations.

Applications for the grants opened on January 7 and close on February 18 with more information available online at sportaus.gov.au/participationgrants
