Mardi wins second award

TUMBY Bay Area School’s 2018 Sportsperson of the Year Award has again been won by Mardi Masson.

It is the second time Mardi has won the award which was presented at the end of year presentation assembly.

The award has been presented since 2000, and Mardi now joins an exclusive club who have won this award, as past winners have represented the sporting field not just locally, but at state, national and international level.

This includes dual recipient Jake Andrewartha (2004 and 2006) who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games for Judo after representing Australia at the 2012 London Olympics.

At school level Mardi who was in year 8, participated in the swimming carnival for Yarranyacka where she dominated winning both the junior girls and senior girls medals, along with breaking two records.

Her performance at sports day resulted in Mardi winning the junior girls medal and then being selected in the Eastern Eyre Peninsula Area School Sports Association Interschool Athletics team at Cowell where she won two events.

She was also a key member with a variety of interschool school sporting teams including year 8/9 girls football, netball, cricket and touch, and year 8/9 boys 20/20 cricket and open girls football.

In netball Mardi was a member of the Eyre United D grade premiership team, she also made her A  grade debut and she played under 13 association netball for Great Flinders.

Mardi plays colts cricket in the local under 16 competition, plays basketball in the Tumby Bay inters competition and played senior colts football for Eyre United where she won the most consistent trophy, due to her attack on the ball and tackling.

She was part of the CT Crows team which won the under 15 Lower EP Youth Girls Competition and best on ground in the grand final.

Mardi was also selected to play for the Norwood Girls under 14 team that played in the Statewide Cup in Adelaide.

Mardi acknowledged the support of her parents, coaches, umpires, Tumby Bay Area School and her teammates who enable her success in a variety of sports.

She has achieved a remarkable amount of success in a wide variety of sports which is a credit to her.
