Fundraising for the Variety Bash is once again taking the form of the Long Lunch sponsored by the Fresh Fish Place, to be held on May 26 from 12 to 5pm.
This year the Runaway Brides from Car MLC are the sole fundraisers for the event, with seven venues participating so far, providing lunch and drink menus with a focus on local produce.
Venues include the Port Lincoln Hotel, Beer Garden Brewing, the Yacht Club, the Grand Tasman, Del Giorno’s, the Boston Bay Winery and the Rogue and Rascal (and the Rebel).
Port Lincoln Hotel marketing manager Georgia Burke said it was a great way to pool efforts and funds in the one event.
“It brings local businesses together….the idea of “paddock to plate” also supports local farmers and industry,” she said.
Runaway bride Emma Pedler said the long lunch was a festival for food, and that “everyone’s got to eat”.
“People want to do this anyway, but don’t want to drink and drive, so our bus service gives them a lift and half of their ticket goes to charity,” she said.
“There’s good food, good wine, and you’re supporting charity as well,” she said.
Bus passes and items like sun visors, eskies and teddy bears can be purchased from the brides at the event and different venues.
“It’s easy to spot us in a crowd,” said runaway bride Ms Pedler.
People travel from as far away as Cummins, Tumby Bay, Streaky Bay and Wudinna for the event.
Last year the long lunch raised about $3,500 for variety, and Ms Pedler said they are aiming for a similar amount in 2019.
Menus from the seven venues are set to be finalised by the end of the month and released on the long lunch social media pages on Facebook and Instagram.
The event will also be following the hashtag #PLlonglunch2019 for those posting to social media.
Deb White, the OV1’s driver from the Variety Bash executive said the route had just been established from Mawson Lakes to Murray Bridge, with the actual tracks to be released on February 22.
Four teams from the Eyre Peninsula will be taking part this year.
