Koonibba starts the 2019 season with consecutive wins after defeating the Blues

Koonibba made it two wins from two to start the 2019 A grade Far West football season after downing a dogged Blues team by 19 points on Saturday.

The Roosters led a close match at every change and eventually got the better of the Blues as it ended 10-16 (76) to 7-15 (57).

Winston Ginger and Tjerayh Ware were among those to impress for Koonibba, while Rohan Lambeff and Mark Mozol did their part for the Blues.

Just three goals were kicked in the first quarter as Koonibba led by six points at the siren, a lead which was reduced to four by half-time as there continued to be little between the teams.

Inaccurate kicking was the order of the day, with the Roosters at 4-8 heading into the main break and the Blues kicking six behinds in the second quarter to sit on 3-10.

That continued in the third term with a total of nine behinds between the sides as Koonibba extended its lead to 11 points.

The Roosters edged the final quarter with four goals to three which saw them come out on the winning side of yet another close encounter.

Edwin Gray and Royden Miller were the only Koonibba players to grab two goals and they were matched by the Blues' Jaxon Bennett.

Elsewhere, Western United thrashed Thevenard by 116 points at Penong.

The reigning premiers kicked clear in the second quarter to race away to a 20-14 (134) to 3-0 (18) result.

Jarden Stoetzer was imperious in front of goal as he booted 10 goals for the Tigers, while Jarrad Murphy added five.

Matthew Degner, Ryan Irvine and Dom Denton were on target for the Magpies.

The opening quarter saw the Tigers kick three goals to one for a 14-point advantage at the first break, however they stormed away after quarter-time.

Thevenard was kept scoreless in the second term yet the goals were much easier to come by at the other end with Westies bagging five.

Down by 49 points at half-time, the pain only got worse for the Magpies when play resumed.

Western United was relentless in kicking six goals to Thevenard's one to further increase the gap to 81 points.

With the game sewn up there was no sign of the Tigers taking their foot off the pedal and as in the opening round they added to their score with ease in the final quarter.

Another six-goal term saw Western United take the lead into triple figures to continue a dominant start to the season.

Stoetzer and Jesse Chandler were outstanding for the Tigers, while Lachlan Wilkins and Beau Halbert never stopped for Thevenard.

In the B grade, a big third quarter helped Koonibba get past the Blues by 45 points.

Separated by only 10 points at half-time, Koonibba surged ahead to win 12-8 (80) to 5-5 (35).

William Buckskin was important in front of goal with three for the Roosters.

It was the Blues who shaded a tense first quarter to take a five-point lead into the first break, however Koonibba managed to turn it around to lead at half-time.

A 10-point lead turned into 41 points by three-quarter time thanks to a superb display in which the Roosters booted six goals to one.

With the match in command Koonibba saw it out in the fourth term to maintain a perfect start.

Thevenard dominated the first half to defeat Western United 14-5 (89) to 6-1 (37).

The Magpies kicked eight goals to one in the opening two terms and ended up winning by 52 points.

They came racing out of the blocks with four goals to one in the first quarter and added another four goals in the second term while keeping the Tigers scoreless.

Thevenard maintained the intensity in the third quarter and with the game wrapped up saw Western United kick three goals in the final term.

Ryan Irvine led with five majors and Neville Bryant added four, while Westies player Tyron Fox kicked two goals.
