Western United secure ninth win with a 56-point success against Koonibba

Western United led throughout the match to record a 56-point victory against Koonibba in A grade Far West football action on Saturday.

The Tigers got the jump from the opening siren to win 14-10 (94) to 5-8 (38).

Jarden Stoetzer was again pivotal in front of goal as he booted five majors and was assisted by Tyler Dunn's three goals and two from Harlee Chandler, while Wilfred Edwards kicked two for the Roosters.

A good start to the match saw Westies take command, with all four goals in the opening quarter going their way to lead by 22 points at the first break.

The margin was extended to 42 points by half-time as the visitors kicked five goals to Koonibba's two.

Both teams could only add a goal apiece in a tough third quarter, with the Tigers finishing the match with four final-quarter goals to win for the ninth successive time in 2019.

It was much closer in the other match between the Blues and Thevenard as the Blues came from behind to win a thriller by a point.

Blues player Shane Coulthard kicked the winning goal as it ended 5-6 (36) to 5-11 (35).

Thevenard had the better of the opening quarter with two goals to one to lead by eight points at the first break.

The Magpies would build on that start to extend the margin to 20 points as they dominated the second term with two goals to two behinds.

When the teams last met the Blues had to produce a second-half comeback to secure a first win of the season and they clawed their way back into this match in the third term.

The Blues kicked three goals to see the margin reduced to only two points by the time the siren signalled the final break.

Coulthard was on hand to kick the lone goal of the final quarter 10 minutes in, putting the Blues up by two points.

They had to hold on for nearly 20 minutes to win, with Thevenard only adding a further behind - inaccuracy plagued the Magpies' second half as they kicked just six behinds.

Jaxon Bennett was pivotal in the third term with two goals for the Blues and was the only player to kick more than one in the match.

In the B grade, a big second-quarter showing saw Koonibba past Western United by 42 points.

The Roosters kicked five goals to no score in the second term on their way to an 11-4 (70) to 4-4 (28) result.

A one-point lead at quarter-time turned into 33 points by the main break as Koonibba tore past Westies.

Both teams added a goal in the third term, before the Roosters continued their perfect season with three goals to finish the match.

Derek Gray kicked three goals, with William Buckskin, Roy Day and Edwin Gray grabbing two each, while Westies' John Polkinghorne booted a pair of majors.

Thevenard kicked clear in the third term to get the better of the Blues 7-8 (50) to 5-8 (38).

The Magpies' third-quarter showing of five goals to no score was vital in their 12-point success.

Brenton Mullan led with three goals, while Aden Martin kicked two for the Blues.

It was all Thevy in the first quarter as they kept the Blues scoreless to lead by 15 points, but the visitors reversed the scenario in the second term to keep Thevenard scoreless and claim a one-point advantage at half-time.

After Thevenard's big third term left the Blues with a mountain to climb, they kicked three goals to a point in the final term yet it was not enough.
