The Port Lincoln A and H Show Society is inviting local artists to submit their work for the first Port Lincoln Show Society Art Prize.

Artists have been invited to submit up to three art works that are an original composition of any medium.

The prize will have an open category which has a $200 prize for first, $100 for second and $50 for third, and an under 15 category with $100 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third.

Both categories include a $50 Picture Perfect voucher for first, donated by the Port Lincoln Art Group.

Show pavilion coordinator Peter Hughes said the show aimed to showcase local talent in many areas.

"We'd like to have a feature class each year, whether it's in horticulture, horses in action or poultry," he said.

"We'd just like to promote an area that we have a section for."

Mr Hughes said the art section had long been a staple of the show pavilion.

Entries for the art prize close on August 17 and winners will be announced at the Port Lincoln Show gala opening on August 21 at the showgrounds.

Local artist Kathy Cowley said it was great to see this prize being offered as it was another chance to showcase local artistic talents.

There are also many classes for artists to enter at the show including scrapbooking, origami, mosaic and pastel drawing.
