PORT LINCOLN TABLE TENNIS
PLAYERS from Whyalla, Adelaide, Great Flinders and Eyre Peninsula took part in the Port Lincoln Table Tennis Association's annual tournament on August 3 and 4.
The junior events were held on the Saturday, where Port Lincoln player Nathan Fong took out the under 18 and under 15 events.
Runners-up were Serena Fong from Port Lincoln (under 18) and Whyalla's Ky Gray (under 15).
Port Lincoln's Jack Barnett won the under 13 and under 11 events from fellow Lincoln player Charlotte Atkins.
The highlight was the women's A open singles event...
The seniors played over 40 and over 60 singles and doubles events and restricted events on the Saturday.
Sunday was a full day starting at 8.30am with events for A, B, and C grade with handicap doubles and singles events.
In the blue ribbon events, the men's open doubles were won by Darren Atkins and Daniel Challinger over Andrew Gray and Ben Friedrich (Whyalla) while in the women's open doubles it was an all Port Lincoln affair with Lesley Kolega and Ellen Challinger defeating Serena Fong and Sally Kunze 11/8, 15/13, 11/3. The mixed open doubles was another all Port Lincoln final, won by Daniel Challinger and Sally Kunze over Darren Atkins and Vicki Mundy.
The highlight was the women's A open singles event between two Port Lincoln players; Serena Fong defeated Sally Kunze to win back to back titles.
In an awesome final of the men's A open singles, local Shane Stockham fought his way back from two sets to love down to take the title in five gruelling sets over Ben Friedrich (Whyalla).
Good sportsmanship awards went to Charlotte Atkins (Port Lincoln) and Ky Gray (Whyalla).
The association thanked its sponsors, Mitre 10 and K and K Cooling and all players who travelled long distances, hailing the tournament a great success.
