Port Lincoln hosts 200 for Probus

Port Lincoln Probus clubs hosted the 2019 regional rally at Ravendale Sporting Complex on Tuesday September 10, with about 200 people in attendance.

Rally committee and Ladies Probus president Leonore Morton said they have been planning the event since they found out they were the next hosts last September.

"It's a great annual gathering of all Eyre Peninsula clubs and surrounds...it's a regional rally," she said.

"It's a chance for renewing friendships, a lot do...it's a great time to get together.

"We have "robians from Cleve, Streaky Bay, Tumby Bay, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Quorn and Kimba, and an apology from Cowell."

She said the rally enjoyed school students singing, a roast lunch, and guest speakers including paralympian Kieran Modra.

"Kieran has little sight, but he has participated in pole vault, swimming and cycling, he's very very motivational," she said.

Mr Modra grew up in Port Lincoln and has won five gold and five bronze paralympic gold medals over his career, as well as two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games.

He was invited to speak at the rally by a member of the committee.

"Being a born and bred country boy, I took up the opportunity to come back here," he said.

He said his speech reflected on his long career as an athlete.

"I reflected on the eight games I've been to over 20 years, and sharing inspiration and challenges dealing with growing up with a vision impairment, and turning that into sport prowess," he said.

He said feedback from his address at the rally was "absolutely overwhelming".

"I'm actually inspired by the response I've had...it's nice to get back on the farm, touching base with my roots."

Kimba will host the Probus Rally in 2020.
