The expansion of the Port Lincoln Leisure Centre is expected to be finished by December 14 and the community is invited to go and have a look.

Work on the expansion began late last year and includes a new indoor sports show court with space for spectator seating, an outdoor basketball shooting court, three new squash courts, new lift services and upgraded change rooms.

The Port Lincoln City Council took over the final stage of the centre expansion in May after the Adelaide-based company leading the project, Unique Urban Built, went into liquidation.

The council's chief executive officer Stephen Rufus said the project would not have been possible without the hard work and cooperation of the many local trades and suppliers who supported the project.

"Not only does the Leisure Centre provide necessary health and wellbeing opportunities such as sport, fitness and rehabilitation services, it is also a place to gather, learn new skills, have some fun and connect with others in the community," he said.

The YMCA in conjunction with the council is inviting the community to an open day on December 14 from noon to 4pm.

The day will include basketball demonstrations and matches, squash demonstrations and come-and-try sessions, a bouncy castle, face painting, sausage sizzle and $5 entry to aquatic activities.

The event will also involve the Port Lincoln Basketball Association, West Coast Swimming Club and Port Lincoln Squash Club.

Port Lincoln mayor Brad Flaherty said the council wanted to ensure the expansion delivered a first class facility that provided great experiences for the community.

"I encourage all members of the community to join us at the celebrations on Saturday 14 December to see and experience all this wonderful facility has to offer for themselves," he said.
