Zonta Club of Lower Eyre celebrates Amelia Earhart Day
The Zonta Club of Lower Eyre held a successful event in Eyre Lounge at the Port Lincoln Airport on Saturday, January 18, honouring the achievements of Zontian, aviator and women's rights advocate Amelia Earhart.
The first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Earhart set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in forming The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.
In commemoration Zonta celebrates Amelia Earhart Day on January 11 and remembers her contributions to the aerospace industry and empowerment of women in science.
Guest speaker Sue Chappell, an aviator and past member of the Port Lincoln Zonta Club spoke on what she did to achieve her dream of becoming a pilot.
Some of her stories had everyone in fits of laughter, while other stories left the audience amazed at her achievements.
Helen Lamont and her band of helpers served up a delicious brunch enjoyed by the 47 people in attendance.
The raffle will see $276 going towards South Australia's bushfire victims.
Everyone was invited to make a paper plane and these were thrown down the airport terminal, winners received a book on how to make paper planes.
