Wise claims first Port Lincoln junior championship

Sixteen-year-old Brock Wise has claimed his first Port Lincoln Golf Club Junior Championship, with a commanding performance in an 18-hole stroke round on March 22.

Wise's 83 off the stick (nett 80) was far too good for the rest of field, his name will now be etched on the coveted perpetual plate for season 2019/20.

Runner-up in the cool, overcast conditions was 16-year-old Rubin Thompson (103/81).

In the handicap division, former winner Cody Manuel (13) carded a respectable 106 for a nett 71, to finish well clear of thirteen-year-old runner-up, Ashley Durdin (111/78).

Five eager sub-junior golfers also participated in the event , Connor Barrowcliff (aged 10), Zane Black (8) and the three Fitzgerald boys, Archie (11), Larry (9) and Sam (6).

Their day began with some keenly contested putting and chipping challenges on the practice green, Larry claimed the "last man standing" putting prize whilst Archie's consistency saw him receive the chipping award.

All five players then headed out onto the course for a nine-hole SAPSASA modified challenge.

Archie finished in an impressive 46 strokes to win the Sub-Junior Challenge, with Connor (57) second and Larry (61) third.

Sam and Zane were both given encouragement awards for their determined play throughout the day.

It is wonderful to see and hear these young golfers compete in the right spirit, enjoying each other's company and sharing encouraging words with their playing partners.

During the lunchtime presentations, Port Lincoln Golf Club members Norm Marks and Tony Manuel, and the accompanying parents were thanked for their continued assistance and support of the club's junior golf program.

Although there were many wonderful shots played by all competitors during this year's junior championship, we still have a lot of work to do, greater consistency and better course management will see these players take their game to the next level.

Regular Sunday morning coaching sessions will (hopefully) resume on Sunday April 5.

All interested players and families are welcome to attend; please contact the Port Lincoln Golf Club for further details.
