Squad ready for tour

Local members of Art Squad have been successful in obtaining a grant to run workshops for regional artists from the Carclew Project and Development program.

The $6223 grant will help bring Art Squad's latest project, Art Squad on Tour, to life.

The inaugural Art Squad was formed in late 2018 by Country Arts SA, comprising of nine young regional artists across the state, including Eliza Wuttke and Belili Valkyrie from Port Lincoln, as well as several others on the EP.

Miss Wuttke is now the project coordinator for Art Squad on Tour.

"The Art Squad on Tour project is an independent project of the Art Squad designed to take the skills and connections we have gained from the last two years in the Art Squad program and share that with more young regional creatives," she said.

"With the official program finishing up in October of this year the squad members were keen to work together as independent artists on a project that shared what we have gained."

She said they found out about their grant success a few weeks ago after applying in late February, and said they now hope to hold the 'tour' in September or early October, in which seven of the nine original squad will travel to six regional communities to deliver workshops for local creatives.

"We are hoping to deliver these workshops in person, but obviously this will depend on coronavirus restrictions and health recommendations closer to the time," she said.

"We have a number of other squad members from the EP involved including Belili Valkyrie (Port Lincoln), Ashton Filmer (Wudinna/Port Lincoln), Lyall Ware-Campbell (Ceduna) and Matilda Sweeney (Whyalla).

"We will also be running workshops in both Port Lincoln and Ceduna so there will be opportunity for other emerging creatives from the region to get involved."

Miss Wuttke said the types of workshops would be a mix of practical and professional development workshops, with the main focus being creating connections between young artists.

She said expressions of interest for the workshops would likely open next month. To follow Art Squad on Tour's progress, follow the hashtag #artsquadoutandabout on social media.
