The year is most associated with the Apollo 11 mission which led to Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to walk on the moon.

It was also the year of the Woodstock Festival, held on a farm in Bethel, New York in August and featured some of the biggest music acts at the time including The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Jimi Hendrix.

Closer to home Prime Minister John Gorton is re-elected after defeating opposition leader Gough Whitlam in the federal election.
