It may be a challenging time in the present at the moment and the outlook of the future is changing constantly, so why not escape to the past?

This week the Port Lincoln Times Flashback Friday gallery goes back 30 years to feature images from the pages of editions throughout August, 1990.

Bob Hawke became at the time Australia's second longest serving Australian Prime Minister, meanwhile in the United Kingdom it was the end of the road for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who resigned after 11 years in office.

There was no more East Germany or West Germany as the two sides became a united Germany once more and Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 years.

In August, Iraq invaded Kuwait which would kickstart the Gulf War.

In sport the 1990 Commonwealth Games took place in Auckland, New Zealand with Australia topping the medal tally with 52 gold, 54 silver and 58 bronze.
