Port Lincoln Times Flashback Friday: 2003 | GALLERY

It is Friday again and for Port Lincoln Times readers that means it is time to look back at photos from the past with the weekly Flashback Friday gallery.

While we are approaching winter at the moment we are going straight through to spring for this week's gallery, which looks at images from throughout November, 2003.

One major story for the Port Lincoln Times revolved around the race that stops the nation, or in this case stopped Port Lincoln which celebrated Makybe Diva's first Melbourne Cup win.

See how the local connections to Makybe Diva celebrated and how Port Lincoln marked the occasion.

In November, 2003 John Howard was Prime Minister and Simon Crean was opposition leader, although he would resign by the end of the month making him the first Labor Party leader never to face a federal election, he would be replaced by Mark Latham.

In sport Brisbane Lions became the first team since Melbourne in 1957 to win three straight premierships, defeating Collingwood by 50 points in the AFL Grand Final while it was heartbreak for Australian rugby fans as the Wallabies lost the 2003 Rugby World Cup final on home soil, losing to England 17-20 after a late Jonny Wilkinson field goal in extra time.
