Well, good riddance winter. Spring is here and hopefully the weather keeps improving. Here's what was biting and where.
Large salmon have been very good over the last week between Convention and Talia on most surf beaches.
Fish to five kilograms have been reported at numerous locations. The better beaches have been Convention, Locks Well and Talia. Streaky and Venus bays have seen some good catches of King George whiting, salmon trout, garfish and silver trevally.
King George whiting have been hard to find inside the bay. garfish, salmon trout and silver trevally have been caught in most areas, along with a few gummy sharks and plenty of eagle rays.
Farm Beach has seen some good bags of fat King George whiting to 40cm being caught on cockles. There are also plenty of good squid around the weed beds.
Offshore continues to fire for good numbers of large nannygai. Jigs and squid baits are the most successful options for the nannys. There are also some nice big gummy and school sharks and some big silver trevally available around the reefs.
King George whiting inside the bays are still hard work, but if you find a few, they should be easily legal sized.
Better options are around the S Bends, Horse Rock and September Beach to Taylor Lumps.
Cockles or prawn baits have been successful. Squid and salmon continue to be the better options in Proper, Boston and Louth bays, but there are also some good garfish around if you berley up a bit.
The town jetty and wharf are still holding plenty of small to medium sized squid. Small jigs with warm cloth and rattles are a good option. Best colours seem to be black, pink or pilchard patterns. Sleaford to Wanna has been hit and miss for salmon. Some days, plenty of 2-5kg fish are in close, then other days, no schools at all. Offshore has been good for nannygai and a few sharks.
The Group is still producing good numbers of King George whiting, some big squid, silver trevally, salmon to two kilograms and garfish.
The jetty has been good for squid and a few yellowfin whiting and the Marina has plenty of salmon trout and a few other species around high tides.
PORT NEILL/ARNO BAY
King George whiting have been caught by boaties close to shore. Do not rule out fishing in 1-3 metres of water early or late in the day.
With a bit of berley, there are a few good fish around. Over the weed beds there are plenty of good sized squid being caught on black or pink jigs.
Yellowfin whiting, a few good squid, tommies and some salmon trout were reported.
