Port Lincoln City Council to conduct COVID-safe Australia Day

Port Lincoln City Council is changing the format of its Australia Day festivities in 2022 which will include a takeaway breakfast and livestreamed presentation.

In light of the current COVID-19 situation the council has opted for a change in format for the day, which will start with a takeaway breakfast from 7.30am served at the Flinders Laneway outside the Nautilus Arts Centre.

Official Australia Day proceedings will begin from inside the arts centre from 11am which will be broadcast live on radio station 5CC and livestreamed on the Magic 899, 5CC and council Facebook pages.

A citizenship ceremony willalso be conducted at 12pm which will see a new group of residents becoming Australian citizens.

Proceedings will include a Welcome to Country and Australia Day speech from Port Lincoln sculptor Ken Martin, followed by the presentation of awards to this year's winners Sharon Humenick (Citizen of the Year), Shania Richards (Young Citizen of the Year), SALT Festival (Community Event of the Year) and Lain Montgomerie (Award for Active Citizenship).

Award winners will be invited along with a small group of family and friendswho witness them receive their awards in person.

Port Lincoln mayor Brad Flaherty said Australia Day was a significant event and the council wanted to "Reflect, Respect and Celebrate" as much as it could in a COVID-safe way for all to enjoy.

Port Lincoln Little Athletics and Eagles Softball Club will cook the breakfast along with elected council members and gold coin donation on the day will go to fundraising for both clubs.
